Reviving the University of Anbar:

The University of Anbar suffered extensive destruction during the war against terrorist organizations in 2014, which led to widespread damage to infrastructure, including buildings and public network services. As a result, the university was forced to relocate from its main campus and was hosted at alternative sites in the capital, Baghdad. After liberation, the University President launched a major reconstruction campaign in 2020, racing against time to rebuild the destroyed main buildings and develop facilities and public services in a way that would enhance the educational process and accommodate the increasing number of students admitted to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Funding for this effort was secured from multiple sources, including the Ministry of Higher Education’s educational plan, the Reconstruction Fund for Areas Affected by Terrorist Operations, the Regional Development Fund in Anbar Province, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). These projects were divided into rehabilitation and reconstruction initiatives. The rehabilitation projects included the restoration and construction of damaged buildings.

Sustainable Reconstruction at the University of Anbar:

As for the reconstruction projects, they included the establishment of new initiatives aimed at increasing the university’s capacity to accommodate the growing number of students admitted to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, in line with the university’s developmental plans. These reconstruction projects were divided into two categories: service projects, which aim to provide modern infrastructure including buildings and public services, and sustainability and clean energy projects.

Among the sustainability initiatives was a project titled “Anbar University: A Green Oasis,” which aims to transform the university into a sustainable, eco-friendly environment through the expansion of green spaces, tree planting, and the use of clean energy sources.

The following chart illustrates the number of projects implemented and their costs under the "Green Oasis" initiative. It shows the annual distribution of project numbers and costs from 2020 to 2025, in addition to the total number of projects and overall cost. This reflects the scale of efforts made to achieve sustainable development at the university.

Clean Energy Transformation:

As for clean energy projects, the university has completed 20 solar energy projects with a total capacity of 447 kilowatts. Additionally, four projects are currently underway with a capacity of 600 kilowatt-hours. The university also plans to implement future projects with a total capacity of 1,000 kilowatt-hours, distributed across 21 projects, as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve self-sufficiency through the use of clean energy.

Tracking Reconstruction Progress: 2021–2025

The following chart illustrates a comparison between the costs of completed and ongoing projects for each year from 2021 to 2025. It highlights the expansion of investments in recent years, along with the number of completed and ongoing projects. This reflects the diversity of initiatives and the university’s growing commitment to achieving its developmental and strategic goals.

On the other hand, the following charts illustrate the entities that funded the university’s projects. The first chart shows the distribution of rehabilitation project costs by funding sources during the period 2020–2025, while the second chart presents the distribution of new construction project costs according to the funding entities for the same period. This reflects the diversity of funding sources and the university’s efforts to expand its partnerships in support of its development plans.

The following images represent a glimpse of the ongoing construction projects at the University of Anbar, which include the development of new academic and service buildings aimed at meeting future expansion needs and enhancing the university environment.

Campus Growth and Green Initiatives (2020–2025)

The two diagrams below illustrate the changes that occurred on the university campus between 2020 and 2025. The university witnessed an increase in green spaces as a result of the implementation of the "Green Oasis" project, along with a limited expansion of planted areas and gardens within the campus. As shown in the 2025 diagram, several new buildings have been completed, along with buildings currently under construction, to support the academic and service expansion at the university. The diagram also highlights additional areas designated for sports fields and activities, contributing to the improvement of the university environment and meeting some of the students' needs.
